Posts Tagged ‘Anime’… Buyer Beware!

Posted by zerofigures on February 18, 2011

I titled this posting with a question mark because I’d like to be proven wrong.  I’d like to think that we anime fans and Otaku now have another ally in our quest as consumer for goods.  Somewhere to find that one item we’ve been searching for that sold out months ago.  But lack of information and actions lead me to think otherwise.

I was searching for a figure everywhere, every website (I trust) that I have purchased things in the past from were long sold out.  This lead me to do a long web search to hunt this figure down.  I searched and searched and came upon who had 2 figures I was searching for well below the going prices.  I placed the items in the cart but my buyers instinct kicked in, as well as an old saying, “If it seems to good to be true, it probably is”.

So the research began.  The bottom of their website lists a blog, twitter and facebook.  The blog doesn’t link to a functioning site and the facebook doesn’t either.  The twitter does work but is full of links direct visitors to their main site.  I also found this blog they’ve created which is definitely complete BS.  I feel confident enough saying that due to the fact that a certain Mr. Peter Payne of who frequently updates his blog, wrote that story on Jan 21, 2011 (good eyes Cupcakez89).  I ‘d recommend subscribing to his blog, it’s full of great information on Japan through American eyes.  I did a BBB (Better Business Bureau) search and came up with nothing.  Continued searching and couldn’t find anything except another buyer thinking the same as me  (I hope they do another search and come up on this posting).

I then questioned the authenticity of OnA on MFC and someone  said they thought their cds were fake (I’m inquiring with them now).  So others agree that things don’t seem to be straight with OnA.  I’m hoping that we are wrong and they’re legit and providing our community with some awesomely discounted anime goods, but until then I won’t be providing them with any details of mine.   What’s your opinion on this?

UPDATE – I just got learned.  I know understand why the cd’s are being identified as fake and I agree.  Taking a product, slapping your own catalog number and logo on it , does not make it yours.  The quality of the item is sure to be lower than that of any official product. Thanks MFC.

UPDATE #2 – Peter Payne, owner and blogger, has commented and confirmed that is not a trustworthy site. Do not buy from

Nujabes… Rest In Peace

Posted by zerofigures on March 19, 2010

This may be late , but these are my thoughts.  I just learned of this and have to release.

And here I though today was going to be a good day, just another day.

Was on Kotaku today and was blown away to read the headline “Samurai Champloo Music Producer Is Dead“. How quickly that has changed… The article reports that the accident occurred late February, why am I just learning of this now?!

My memories of Nujabes go back a couple of years when courting my current girlfriend.  Common interests made her recommend the anime Samurai Champloo.  I was was changed.  Easily one of the best anime’s to date.  Simply a must own series for any anime fan.  Great animation, great story and a classic soundtrack.

This greatly saddens me.  To think that we will no longer be graced by his music is horrible.  I can’t even begin to think about how much his music contributed to the success of Samurai Champloo.

I’m unable to come up with much right now but Nujabes was definitely of the primary reasons for my love of Japanese music.  The mixture of rhythm and culture just pour out from his beats.

I’m not sure many will ever come close to his style.  Looking at him sitting with his equipment is pleasing and puts a smile on my face.

Rest In Peace Nujabes.

His personal website is here

wiki here

I tried unsuccessfully to leave a comment on his main site but I’m not sure if it will go through so I’m posting it here as well.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

You will not be forgotten.  Nujabes helped me to open my eyes and see that Hip Hop is not what radio stations force feed us.
Nujabes is international. Nujabes put my mind at ease.  Nujabes was taken from us too soon.  Much too soon.

Shining Wind’s Kureha by President Japan and Tony Taka

Posted by zerofigures on November 11, 2008

In my previous post I mentioned that I had received 3 figures 2 weekends ago.  Here is the third.  Created in the wonderful mind of Tony Taka for Shining Wind/Tears anime and videogame, President Japan brings her to life in PVC form.

Kureha (1)

Besides Gashapon, I believe this is the third incarnation of Kureha.  The first by Max Factory became a favorite of collectors and is a bit hard to find.  The second by Kotobukiya is still currently available at some retailers.

Kureha (36)Kureha (24)

The big thing about this figure is the eyes.  Instead of the normal painted on eyes, this Kureha has inset eyes like the dolls of many little girls.  You know those dolls who’s eyes open and close as you stand them up or lay them down?  Yeah, those eyes.  Staring into the eyes a bit weird because it’s definitely more life like than other PVC.

Kureha (4)Kureha (7)

Looking at pictures at the Kotobuiya Kureha, I appreciate this one more.  PJ’s looks older and provides us with a different post than most PVC.  Her dress adds quantity to the figure as it is sprawled out around the figure.  She almost seems like a bird resting after a long flight.

Kureha (33)Kureha (53)

She’s an elegant and sweet looking figure with a surprising feature. As I unboxed the figure and removed the protective plastic I noticed she became a bit loose around the waist. I totally did not expect to be casting this figure off in anyway but it’s alsways a welcome feature as long as it’s done tastefully.

Kureha (35)

I found it a bit difficult to get many perfect shots.  The position of the figure doesn’t allow for capturing of her entire body in a single shot.  You either capture the face and miss out on the legs or you cature the legs but miss out on the eyes (all four ^_^).

Kureha (12)

In the end she is still a nice figure which would add variety to any collection through it’s color and sitted position.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Posted by zerofigures on October 2, 2008

“One whose drill will pierce the heavens”

At what point do you decide an anime is great?  Can you tell 5 episode into the series? 10? 12?  Lots of people decide whether an anime is worth watching within the first handful of episodes.  Many quit and banish an anime from their memory with no knowledge of what they are missing.

Going into a series and expecting to be satisfied immediately can lead you to miss out on the greatness that a series may truly be.  Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is a great series that upon completion should leave the viewer wanting so much more.  I personally had no issues with any episodes but I tend not to nit-pick, just let it go.  With so much going for it the small things really are insignificant.

With an awsome soundtrack and one the best intros (performed by the lovely Shouko Nakagawa) I can remember, Gurren Lagann stands out amongst the best of late.  As with most animes, the introduction of a song at just the right moment can be critical and in my opinion Gurren Lagann pulls it off flawlessly.  Though it doesn’t have an abundance of selections, it’s still fun and a great listen.

The Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Original Soundtrack can be purchased at Playasia

So much of the series seems to unfold as shocking events, I’ll do my best not to mention any of them since it’s best discovered on your own.  After many twists and turns, you kinda get used to it, but all that does is make you want more and more.  The introduction of main characters is well done and side characters come together to perform substantial roles throughout the storyline.

About half way through the series it ends and reboots itself showing the evolution of the characters sometime later.  The later episodes rewards us with a similar plot to the first half but with new problems.  Not aware of consequences foretold, our heros/heroines are faced with a new problem they themselves have unknowingly created.  I know I’m being a bit vague but I really don’t wanna spoil anything for anyone since I enjoyed the so much.

I went into TTGL through nobody’s recommendation.  It was purely curiosity and probably images of Yoko and Gurren Laggan.  Despite starting off slow and people hating particular episodes, the show has managed to gather a huge following.  Along with a heavy merchandising blitz (including PVC figures (some of which I have reviewed) , shirts, mugs, a video game and the usual anime related merchandise), Gurren Lagann has spawned a movie which was release on September 6th.  A second movie has also been mentioned.

It’s been my pleasure to share my views of TTGL with you and urge you to watch the series if you haven’t already and complete it if you gave up on it too early.  Hopefully, I haven’t said too much and you will feel as good as I felt upon completion of the series.  Now if the movie would only make it stateside.

Also over here in N.A – I remember catching a couple of episode on the Sci-Fi network as part of their Ani-Monday block at the 11pm EST.  Of course the episodes are dubbed w/no subs, but if I do remember correctly, at least the intro was still the original.

Thanks for the Mammaries. Shiori Tsuzuki.

Posted by zerofigures on September 11, 2008

Wow.  In my 2 years of figure collecting, never have I been through what Shiori put me through; or rather what my post office put me through.  Lord knows what she went through during her two months in transit to me.  But she’s finally home and I am happy to have her.

Shiori (1)

I have quite a significant amount of Witchblade figures.  I love Makoto Uno’s style of art and enjoyed the Witchblade anime series.  I also liked Dragonaut but have yet to complete the series.  Dragonaut has been largely criticized and widely hated but I love the art so I’m gonna finish it.  But I digress, I have many of the Witchblade figures but they are all of Masane Amaha with the exception of one, Maria.  I’ve seen a couple of other non-Amaha Witchblade figures but they didn’t appeal to me until this one.

Shiori (4)

She was preordered from HLJ and I anxiously waited for her to be in stock.  She finally shipped on July 17 and I did my normal waiting as usual for my HLJ orders.  Weeks go by and nothing arrives so I figure I’ll email HLJ but the site says to wait 7-45 days for SAL shipping.  So I wait and wait and wonder where my item is.  So finally I hear something from HLJ, not good news though. My package has been received by HLJ.  WHAT?  WTF?  So they gave me a two options reship at my cost or have the amount of the figure credited to my account.  No Brainer, I had it reshipped.  It reshipped on August 25 and arrived on September 10 while I was at work.

I get home later that evening to find this in front of my door.
Shiori Shipping Box

I couldn’t believe my eyes but rather than get too angry I literally just laughed.  Got my camera out before even opening the box ready to file my claim.  After the pics of the shipping box I set her free and took more pictures of the figure box.  I had no idea whether the figure survived whatever crushed the shipping box but somehow the figure itself survived.

As horrifying as this situation was, I kept my cool and everything worked out.  SAL shipping is slow and dangerous but with the amount of figures I buy , I personally can’t afford to ship everything by the safer EMS.  Does anyone out there have any figure shipping horror stories?

So now I present to you the pics. Some are definitely NOT SAFE FOR WORK. The base has “NSWF” though I’m not sure what it is in reference to. So I’ll just take it as NSFW.
Shiori (2)

Here is the Front and Back of the figure
Shiori (4)Shiori (7)
One thing I found odd is the wrist bands, the right arm has it around the wrist, while the left arm has it above the elbow. Granted I understand that it’s covering the joint for her extra arm with weapon but it’s still weird.

Next up is the Left and Right sides, Shiori is definitely giving Queens Blade’s Cattleya a run for her money!
Shiori (5)Shiori (8)

Last two pics are showing the extra arm that’s included and a Cast off pic. If you are underage or your country has laws against you looking at boobs, turn away Now.

Shiori (16)

As always couple more pics on my flickr
